What to expect at your first Invisalign consultation

By Dr Lizzie Dove · July 2026 · 4 min read

A lot of patients arrive at an Invisalign consultation not quite sure what to expect, whether they'll leave with a treatment plan, whether it'll be expensive, whether they'll be told it's not suitable. Here's what actually happens.

What we cover in a consultation

The consultation is really a conversation and a clinical assessment combined. I'll ask what you'd like to change about your teeth and your smile. Not just "I want straight teeth" but what specifically bothers you, what you've always wished was different, and what outcome you're hoping for.

Then I'll look at your teeth clinically, how they bite together, the condition of the enamel, whether there's any wear or existing restorations that affect what's possible. I might take photos or X-rays if needed.

From there I can give you an honest assessment of whether Invisalign is suitable, roughly what treatment would involve, how long it might take, and whether I'd recommend combining it with any other treatment like composite bonding or whitening.

Will I get a treatment plan on the day?

Not usually, at least not a detailed one. The full Invisalign ClinCheck (the digital plan that maps every tooth movement) is designed after the consultation, once impressions or digital scans of your teeth have been taken. But you'll leave the consultation with a clear picture of whether Invisalign is the right path and what the process would involve.

What questions should I ask?

What happens after the consultation?

If you decide to go ahead, the next step is digital scanning or impressions of your teeth. These are used to plan the ClinCheck, the digital animation of your tooth movements from start to finish. You'll get to see this before treatment starts and approve it before any aligners are made.

Once the aligners are manufactured (usually two to four weeks), treatment begins. Most patients have check-in appointments every six to eight weeks throughout.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed. You can contact me directly to book a consultation at either Helensvale or Burleigh Heads.
